Honeybee population across Europe, North America and other countries has been steadily decreasing, raising ecological concerns and food security problems. A report published in the Current Science journal confirms that mobile phone technology is to be blamed for the decreasing honeybee population. Increase in the use of wireless connectivity networks like cell phones and laptop are creating electro-pollution.
Electro-pollution means that natural wildlife is being affected by electrosmog. Insects like honeybees are suffering because these little creatures have “magnetite” in their bodies, which helps them to navigate. But with electro-pollution, their navigational powers are failing, as they are getting digressed or distracted due to human created electrosmog.
To know whether cell phone radiation is the main source of the problem, scientists placed two real mobile phones attached to a beehive and another set of false mobile phones to another beehive. For the next three months, the active phones were powered on for 15-minute sessions.
The result was that the honeybee population from the beehive attached with the active cell phone began to disappear steadily. Not only this, there was also less production of honey and a decrease in the number of eggs laid by the Queen bee. At the end of the experiment, there was no trace of pollen and honey in the colony.
This is just one experiment, but it is sufficient enough to raise concerns regarding the negative effect of technology on our environment. Until a safer technological cell phone design is introduced, similar results are bound to come about in nature. Perhaps this is the reason why scientists are focusing on the development of green technology for computers, laptops, mobile phones and other electronic equipment.
Companies like Microsoft have already begun to use green technology for its products. The essential idea is to preserve the environment and not allow it to be negatively affected by technological advancements.
