Are Hotspots Dangerous For Your Computer?

These days, convenience is something we relish, and we frequently make buying choices based on this factor. Modern technology, with all its perceived pitfalls, has done much to make our lives easier. Now we can shop, pay bills and find the latest movies without even leaving home. For those times when we do have to leave our comfort zones, technology has answers for that, too.

During the Internet’s infancy, possibly no one could have imagined that we could access the web wirelessly. Now all you need is your laptop and a hotspot and you can be connected. Naturally, the question of safety arises, as wireless networks are riskier than wired connections. The danger lies in the signal and the fact that it can be intercepted at any time.

Practicing Wireless Network Safety

The first thing you must realize is that providers of free wireless networks have no obligation to protect the integrity of your information. If you have any concerns, it may be best to avoid doing your transactions using a free Wi-Fi network at hotspots. If you have to, there are ways to protect your information, even though there are really no guarantees.

Websites that handle transactions typically use secure servers. This is indicated by the presence of a padlock icon in the upper left hand corner. Look for URLs beginning with ‘https’ as opposed to ‘http’ when using your financial information. There are some hotspots that offer special encryption as part of a secure virtual wireless network. Keep in mind that for this extra level of protection you will need to pay a fee.

You won’t always be able to connect to a wired network, especially if your job requires moving around. Practicing the basics of safety will protect you to some extent, but hackers are always on the prowl for personal information. Convenience is good. But a little bit of vigilance can go a long way.
